Raising before the FLOP

At high four card Omaha, raising before the flop strategy is much more complicated than at holdem. There are a number of good hand situations where it is better not to raise. And there are a number of medium good hand situations where raising before the flop is highly recommended. Tournament Strategy: Part I, noted some of the major overall strategic differences between playing in tournaments and playing in live money games. At any given time in a tournament your strategy is primarily dependent on your relative stack size, which may be designated as “comfortable” (blinds are less than 10% of your chips), “survival mode” (you have chips for two blinds or less), or “struggling”, somewhere in-between comfortable and survival modes.   • Before the flop Money Principle

    I have had a number of inquiries about raising before the flop in four-card high limit Omaha. The two most important strategic reasons to raise before the flop are to “reduce attendance” and to “loosen up the game” (see my book Cappelletti on Omaha, Quartet and Trio Straight Holdings). Please note that getting MORE MONEY into the pot is NOT always an important objective! It is nice to have more money in the pot, only if you happen to win it. But extra money in the pot makes the pot harder to win! (more…)
